The Woodland Trust is offering free Community Tree Packs to help town and parish councils, and community groups, across Suffolk get started with tree and hedgerow creation in a simple, practical way.
Applying is really straightforward. As long as you own the land (or have permission), and once you’ve identified your planting space, our comprehensive FAQs guide you through each step of the process.
For many communities, these packs are a great first step into tree and hedgerow creation. They’re also a valuable way to involve local people — especially children. We’ve seen projects where trees are named by pupils or residents, creating a real sense of ownership. That hands-on experience of planting builds a lasting connection, which often leads to better long-term care and pride in the site.
All trees are grown in the UK and Ireland, helping to limit the risk of importing pests and diseases. They are cell-grown, meaning each tree comes with a small plug of soil around its roots, protecting them from drying out and improving establishment once planted.
Once your application is confirmed, trees are delivered during the planting season, bundled clearly by species. At that point, all you really need are willing volunteers and some enthusiasm to get planting.
There’s a wide choice of packs to suit different situations — from fruit and berry species for wildlife, to the building blocks of new woodland, hedgerows for connectivity, and trees that can even help dry out boggy ground. This variety means there’s something suitable for many different sites and circumstances.
You can also extend your efforts over time. Many groups apply again in future years to top up or expand their planting, gradually creating greener, more resilient spaces for people and nature.
